Synopsis

From celebrated author Janette Oke (the Love Comes Softly series) comes a rigorous and romantic adventure as epic as the wide frontier. Erin Krakow (Army Wives), Daniel Lissing (Eye Candy), Jack Wagner (Melrose Place) and Lori Loughlin (Full House, 90210) star in When Calls The Heart, a beautiful story filled with “many of the values we all hold precious such as love, family, friendship, community, faith and caring about one another” (Military Press). When Eleanor, the wife of Lee’s late silent partner, arrives in town causing problems, it gives Gowen a chance to prove his character. Meanwhile, Faith plans a surprise party for Carson and Jesse has a hard time coping with new job responsibilities. Later, the town comes to grips with the loss of their beloved mountie, Jack.

Dove Review

When Calls the Heart—Close to My Heart brings season 5 to a close in a heart-wrenching and dramatic way. This beloved TV series pulls on the heart strings. Tragic news reaches Elizabeth about her beloved Mountie, Jack (Daniel Lissing), and her loving Hope Valley family rallies around her. Former mayor Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins) is given a chance to redeem himself from his recent jail time to show that he is now a man of integrity. But will he pass the test? Elizabeth continues to show her value by tutoring a new student.

The characters of Hope Valley, the strong, independent, and loving Abigail (Lori Loughlin), the caring and passionate Elizabeth (Erin Krakow), and the crusty but concerned Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) are all outstanding characters, as are the two pillars in the community, Lee Coulter (Kavan Smith) and his wife Rosemary (Pascale Hutton). The dramatic stories, based on Janette Oke’s books, are well executed in the series.

The Dove Take

This is a strong faith and values series. The previous episode dealt with death and a grief-stricken wife who goes through shock, anger, mourning, and the whole range of emotions in grieving. Parents should watch with their children. That said, this is a wholesome series that offers hope in facing life’s challenges, and we are awarding it our Dove-Approved All Ages Seal with a word of caution about the theme of death in the final episode.
