Finding Buck McHenry
Synopsis
Premieres on Showtime 4/16/00 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. Showtime airs a family film about a little league player named Jason Ross (Michael Schiffman), who convinces a friend’s grandfather, Mack Henry (Ossie Davis) to coach a new team sponsored by the owner of a local sports memorabilia shop. Looking through some valuable player trading cards from the past, Jason discovers cryptic references to a legendary Negro League player named Buck McHenry, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Convinced that Coach Mack and Buck McHenry are one the same, Jason embarks on a journey of discovery to prove himself right.
Dove Review
Although this is acceptable family fare, I found it abysmal. Dreadful attempts at humor, poor acting, and selfish, thoughtless behavior on the part of the lead made this difficult to sit through. And let’s not forget those huge credibility gaps. Buck McHenry goes into hiding for forty years. So what’s he change his name to? Mack Henry. Very subtle. The film’s one redeeming value is Ossie Davis. He’s a pro and therefore always interesting to watch.
