Theatrical Release: January 6, 2006

College buddies Paxton and Josh backpack through Europe with their friend Oli, an Icelandic friend they met along the way. He leads the two Americans to a Slovakian town that’s rumored to have a hostel stocked with beautiful Eastern European women. Surprisingly, this turns out to be true, and Paxton and Josh are soon hooking up with Natalya and Svetlana. However, things take a darker turn when they discover the cheap, babe-filled lodge holds a terrifying secret.

Dove Review

Quentin Tarantino is behind this violent, explicit blood bath and one can only hope that his taste will improve if he continues to make movies. Within ten minutes of this film I was afraid I was going to lose count of the number of profanities. The f word is the favorite word in this film and it is used frequently. Try 106 times in less than two hours! In addition, the nudity and sex is graphic in this film.

I had read that some people walked out who viewed this film during screenings, or became physically ill and had to have ambulances called to the theatre. I can believe it. There were a few who walked out of the screening I attended. The premise of the film is that three backpacking friends are seduced by beautiful women at the “hostel” but one by one they begin to disappear until only one is left. The first two are tortured with a drill and knife before they die. It is gruesome and nothing is left to the imagination. The third one learns what happened to them and goes through his own torment. I won’t give the ending away but there is some retribution for the evil deeds a certain “surgeon” and his cohorts commit. However, this film is nowhere near being within the perimeters of Dove’s approval. For something less painful, try a trip to the dentist’s office.
