Take the Lead
Inspired by a true story, Antonio Banderas stars as internationally acclaimed ballroom dancer Pierre Dulaine in the family drama “Take The Lead.” The film revolves around a professional dancer who volunteers to teach in the New York City public school system. But when his classic methods clash with his students’ hip hop instincts, he teams up with them to create a new style of dance and becomes their mentor in the process.
“Take the Lead” works in showing changes and growth in the characters. These characters wouldn’t have dreamed of entering a ballroom dancing competition when they first met dance instructor Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas), but this is exactly what happens. Any film which includes a song by Nat King Cole can’t be all bad, but unfortunately the language prevents this film from being Dove approved. Besides the strong language there is the term, “It sucks,” on a few occasions. There is strong sexual innuendo as well, mainly in the dancing, and in one scene a man begins to become sexually aggressive with a young woman until he is stopped. In another scene a young man places his hand where he shouldn’t. This one doesn’t make the cut for the family.
