Christmas Snow

Mrs. Mutterance (Katherine Helmond) a widow, runs a candy shop in the lower level of the building where she lives on the second floor with her two adopted children (Kimble Joyner, Melissa Joan Hart). On the top floor lives the mean-spirited old landlord, Mr. Snyder (Sid Caesar). On the day before Christmas, Mr. Snyder informs Mrs. Mutterance that she, her store, and family will have to vacate the building as he plans to turn the property into a laundromat. However, on Christmas Eve the city is hit by a snow blizzard, the worst in 25 years, and Mr. Snyder comes up missing. Although Mrs. Mutterance may be losing her store and home, she and the children set out to search for Mr. Snyder in the storm. After finding and rescuing him, Mr. Snyder has a change of heart and a new view on life.

Dove Review

It hasn’t snowed since before the war but Gertie, the local candy store operator, can ‘smell’ that snow is coming when she kisses little Amy’s head. But the crotchety old Mr Snyder, who owns the whole building, argues with her about it and upsets the children. They are an odd little family; Gertie is a widow who never had children of her own, Wallace is a young African American boy and Amy is a blonde haired, blue eyed dreamer. And, after 80 years in business, it looks like the candy store is going to close down. Mr Snyder wants to turn the candy store into an automatic ‘laundry-ette’ so he tells Gertie she has two weeks to find some place else to live. This is devastating because she was born and raised there. Where will they go? Where will they live?

It’s Christmas Eve and Mr Snyder comes up missing and Gertie ‘just knows’ something is wrong. With him gone, a conflict of feelings rages within her and the children. If Mr Snyder never comes back, they won’t have to move; they could keep the store and their home. But, what if he’s lost or hurt or worse? Would they ever be able to live with themselves if they did nothing? So they set off to find him.

While thinking about his new venture he accidentally falls into an open, empty grave. He calls and cries out for help but to no avail. But, on Christmas Day, Gertie and the kids go out again to try one more time. This is a great family DVD! The acting is so genuine and the children are absolutely dear. We gladly award this DVD five doves.
