When I Find the Ocean


Synopsis
The journey of a lifetime for young Lily Strickland begins not out of her love for adventure but out of heartache. Longing for the father she lost to the ocean and having no way to say goodbye, Lily strikes out on her own beginning a journey of the spirit and of the heart. Her mother has found a new man to share her life with and Lily is the bearer of unpleasant secrets only she knows. Leaving behind a safe, loving environment with her grandparents and loving mother, she faces not only her fears but the obstacles the wilderness presents. With her faith and belief that her father will guide her, she sets out with her trusty dog. With the help of a friendly tugboat captain, she follows her dream to find the ocean and to finally set her heart at peace.

“When I Find the Ocean” is a sweet story used to highlight a dark issue that victimizes numerous children. The film exposes the consequences of child abuse and praises Lily’s friend who finally tells adults what’s happened to Lily. Despite Lily’s struggles, the childlike innocence of Lily is a nostalgic reminder of the past when happiness was found in simplicity.
The great outdoors serve as a beautiful backdrop for a story that emphasizes the importance of survival skills and animal care. The movie also glances into history by addressing issues associated with the Civil Rights Movement. In addition, the film reveals the various stages of grieving over the loss of a loved one, and at times, God is acknowledged on a surface level through the role of a preacher as well as through prayers and dialog.
“When I Find the Ocean” is a good story. The charming southern scenery enhances the authenticity of the plot. The viewers will find themselves wrapped up in the story…rooting for the good guys.
